Can you install holiday lights on a standing-seam metal roof?

Yes, as long as nothing touches the metal. The strand rides clips on the fascia or the gutter lip beneath the drip edge, so the panels and seams are never clipped into, drilled, or loaded. Done from the trim line, a metal roof lights as cleanly as any shingle roof.

Why metal is different

A standing-seam roof has no shingle tab to clip under, no surface you can put a fastener through without voiding the roof, and a finish that slides. A strand laid on the panels moves in the first wind, a clip forced onto a seam scratches the coating, and a screw into a panel is a leak and a warranty problem. Forest, Boonsboro, Bedford, and the farmhouses between have more standing-seam roofs than anywhere else we work, which is why we get this question most weeks of the fall.

How we attach without touching the roof

We work from the trim, not the roof. Where the home has gutters, the strand rides a gutter clip on the lip, which puts the light exactly at the eave line with zero contact with the metal. Where there is no gutter, fascia clips hold the strand to the trim behind the drip edge. On gables and rakes, the strand follows the rake trim. The clip material is chosen so there is no galvanic reaction with the metal above it. Nothing is drilled, nailed, screwed, stapled, or hung on the panels.

Keeping crews off the metal

A metal roof is not a surface anyone should walk, wet or dry. Our crews work from ladders with standoffs and from lifts on the tall elevations, so no weight goes on the panels during install or takedown. That is also what keeps people safe during the occasional Central Virginia ice event.

The permanent option

If you want the house lit every evening with the holiday look saved in an app, a permanent LED channel mounts to the fascia or soffit on exactly the same principle: the metal is never involved. It is a strong fit for metal-roofed homes around Lynchburg precisely because the roof stays untouched for good.
